Pineapple is what you call a stoner movie, but it’s not just a bunch of jokes about stoners, it’s more like… The sort of movie a couple of stoners would come up with one night, declaring it the Best Movie Idea Ever, and that’s a big part of what makes the movie funny. It plays not so much like a movie as it does like a daydream about a movie any of us would love to star in, so consider it one of the must see movie downloads for anyone whoever held their finger out like a gun and went “pew pew pew!”

The movie takes a lot of inspiration from The Big Lebowski, centered on roughly the same idea: Take the guys least equipped to handle a stock genre situation from an action or crime story, and make them the heroes. So instead of the ex-cop or the CIA agent, we have lazy couch potatoes as action heroes, to hilarious results.

So the appeal is really that you can see yourself in these guys shoes much more easily than you could James Bond or Schwarzenegger. Most of us will never have a body like Arnold, we’ll never have Bond’s class, swagger and of course, wealth, but we’ve all spent a weekend on the couch watching TV and nodding off here and there. So the story really does feel like it was brainstormed by the heroes themselves.

The story is crazy, it’s all over the place, because, well, it was written by stoners, so just be along for the ride and have fun.

While the focus is on laughs and action, there’s actually a lot of sentimentality here, there’s a sense of sweetness, and it really comes down to a tale of friendship against all odds. It’s one of those “bromantic comedies”, and it’s one of the best, really getting to the heart of what it means to be best bros.

The ending is pitch perfect. After shooting it out with drug dealers all night, the guys get together for a greasy breakfast at an all night diner, rehashing the events of the prior evening over hash browns, boasting about their slick maneuvers in gunfights and car chases, and generally just taking a moment to reflect on their journey and bond together.

Again, the real fun is in seeing yourself up there on screen in these guys. It’s a lot of fun seeing an action movie that, in a way, stars the viewer instead of some musclebound Hercules type. Sure, it’s fun watching Stallone or Bruce Willis shoot a thousand badguys, but it’s even more fun watching somebody you could see yourself hanging out with doing it. This may well become the new thing in action movies with films like Tropic Thunder and Observe and Report also focusing on a different kind of action hero, and the type that you don’t really typically expect to see in such a situation.

The fact that violence isn’t this fun in real life is never addressed, it’s just a hilarious thrill ride from beginning to end. The end result is a wacky, eccentric little gem of a movie that might just qualify as one of the best of the decade, and is certainly one of the funniest. It’s funny, touching, exciting, and unpredictable. The last few years have been a really great era for comedy, thanks to Rogen and company, and this one is no exception.
